Here is a fair and concise summary of the major developments in the educational sector of Nepal from Chaitra 14 to 21, 2082:
1. SEE Examination Conduct and Management
* Start of the Examination: This year’s Secondary Education Examination (SEE) has begun peacefully from 1,966 examination centers across the country. According to the National Examination Board, 512,421 candidates are participating in the examination this year.
* Local Level Answer Sheet Testing: With the aim of publishing the results quickly and on time, the ‘Secondary Education Examination Conduct, Management and Answer Sheet Testing Guidelines-2082’ (issued on Chaitra 18) has been implemented. Under this, the work of checking answer sheets at the examination centers has also been taken forward in districts including Tanahun and Banke.
2. Policy and Legal Decisions
* Supreme Court’s order prohibiting admission before the academic session: The Supreme Court has issued an important order on Chaitra 20, stopping the trend of some private schools taking admissions before the start of the new academic session. Now, the admission process can be started only after the student submits the marks of the previous class annual examination and the transfer certificate and the new academic session has started properly.
* Complete ban on Bridge Course: The Ministry of Education has announced a complete ban on the ‘Bridge Course’ and entrance exam preparation classes conducted for admission to class 11 from April 1. It has been clarified that the admission process will be done entirely on the basis of SEE results and school evaluation to reduce the financial and mental burden on students and parents.
* Ban on political organizations in educational institutions: As part of the good governance reform action plan made public by the newly appointed government, it has been announced that political student organizations will be removed from schools and universities within the next 60 days.
3. University News
* Kathmandu University opens affiliation: Kathmandu University (KU) has initiated the process of granting affiliation to private colleges in various subjects. For this, a notice has been issued to institutions wishing to seek affiliation to submit a letter of intent.
* Controversy over nomination of Tribhuvan University assembly members: The Independent Students Union (SSU) of Tri-Chandra Multiple Campus has expressed serious objections to the nomination process for representation on behalf of students in the Tribhuvan University assembly, saying that it is opaque and that representatives are selected only from a limited number of campuses.
Overall this week: The dignified start of the SEE exam, the ban on professional practices such as ‘bridge courses’ and ‘advance admissions’ that place financial burdens on students and parents, and the government’s resolve to free educational institutions from party politics were the most important educational developments this week.
